Before embarking on his Henley MBA, Khathutshelo Ramukumba had already reached significant heights in his career. However, he recognised that to continue progressing as a corporate leader – and to eventually transition into starting his own venture – he needed to broaden his skill set and perspective.
The Henley MBA was not just a credential; it was a strategic investment in his future, both within and beyond the corporate world.
With a multitude of business schools to choose from, Khathutshelo’s decision to study at Henley was guided by two primary factors. ‘I was drawn to the degree’s high ranking, which signals its academic rigour and relevance, and perhaps even more importantly, the family-friendly structure that allowed me to balance my demanding work responsibilities with further education, while still making time for my family,’ he says. ‘It’s a blend that few other business schools could offer.’
Henley’s transparency about workload and time commitments allowed Khathutshelo’s family to understand and support his ambitions before he registered. ‘I attended the initial Henley MBA information session on campus with my wife, and the school’s unique community approach was immediately evident – it set the tone for a family-inclusive environment that proved vital throughout my Henley MBA journey because my family knew from the outset what we were in for in terms of commitment.’
This upfront honesty helped him manage the inevitable conflicts between study, work, and personal life, ultimately preserving his marriage during a challenging period.
Beyond his immediate family, the sense of community extended to fellow students. The cohort became a close-knit support network, with members going out of their way to help one another. Many of these relationships have endured long after graduation, providing ongoing professional and personal support and, in some cases, leading to enduring friendships.
Post-MBA, Khathutshelo is running his own business in the energy sector as well as pursuing opportunities in the public sector. ‘As a small business all the responsibilities fall on your shoulders, and I am extremely grateful to have had the support of a core group of my Henley peers on this journey. In fact it was one of my MBA colleagues who helped me secure a certificate to trade in petroleum products,’ he says.
The complexity of managing a business that operates across borders brought new challenges, particularly in understanding the nuances of international business. Here, the lessons from Henley’s international business module proved invaluable to Khathutshelo.
‘The course provided frameworks for analysing global markets and developing strategies for success in environments where the rules of engagement differ from one country to the next. It also emphasised the importance of adapting business models to local contexts, helping me navigate everything from regulatory hurdles to cultural differences.
‘What stands out from my Henley experience is the seamless integration of academic theory with real-world application. The MBA programme did not just impart knowledge, it equipped me with practical tools and a mindset for continuous learning. Whether dealing with complex negotiations, leading diverse teams, or making high-stakes decisions under uncertain conditions, the skills and insights gained at Henley have been directly applicable,’ says Khathutshelo.
Reflecting on his journey, Khathutshelo credits the Henley MBA with much more than career advancement. The programme fostered a sense of community, provided a platform for lifelong relationships, and instilled a global perspective essential for modern business leadership. It also prepared him for the rigours of further academic pursuits – he is currently busy with a PhD in Leadership – and the challenges of entrepreneurship.
For aspiring business leaders considering an MBA, Khathutshelo’s story underscores the importance of choosing a programme that not only meets professional needs but also aligns with personal values and life circumstances. At Henley, he found a place where ambition, support, and opportunity converged, setting the stage for continued success in a rapidly changing world.
